about

AEONIA, The Esoterics’ sixteenth CD is inspired by the poetic contemplation of the eternal. Coming from the Latin word for ‘eternity,’ AEONIA features two compositions: by The Esoterics’ composer emeritus Donald Skirvin and the ensemble’s founder, Eric Banks. Skirvin’s work — Stars forever, while we sleep — is an unaccompanied choral symphony that sets nine poems by the American poetess Sara Teasdale. Perhaps his most virtuosic composition (for double and triple chorus), this work was commissioned for The Esoterics in 2009. I am among them is Banks’ setting of texts from his friend and Seattle broadcaster, Dan-Eric Slocum, who took his own life in early 2012. Slocum’s blog, The eternity door, provided the poetry for this work, a 22-minute stream-of-consciousness meditation on life, its struggles, and the hereafter. Banks’ work is also composed for double chorus.
